With Hollywood releasing their most of the movies earlier in India than the release in USA or on the same date as USA, Hollywood has grown in India. This year with movies like Oblivion, Man Of Steel, Prisoners, Gravity, Hollywood has made a strong market in India & it's here to stay. The latest addition to the misery of Bollywood is, Hollywood's "Captain Phillips". I watched this movie day before yesterday, to be honest, i didn't even see it's trailer, i went on google to see abut "Gravity" & there i saw its suggestion, i opened, then i saw great ratings about it. So, i thought why not go & see this. So, i went to see it & came out crying, now here's the important part, i was crying not that the movie was dull, i was crying because the movie was just too splendid.
( Tom Hanks as "Captain Phillips"(middle) & Barkhad Abdi as "Abduwali Muse" (left)
The first thing that encourages you to see this movie is one man, "Tom Hanks" in the main lead & then, the bottom line "Based On A True Story", what better can we get. So, the film starts with "Captain Richard Phillips" played by Tom Hanks, a merchant mariner going for a expedition with his newly built team to Mombasa to deliever food & water & all the important supplies to African nations. In between, he learns that "Gulf Of Aden" is treated as Pirate's Paradise as Somalia is very close to it, so Somalian Pirates hijack the big ships & take ransom for it. After learning this, he orders security drills in the vessel to check that everyone is doing his duty, but as they start their drill Captain sees that, 2 skiffs of Somalian pirates coming their way but with his smartness, he outruns them. "Abduwali Muse" played by Barkhad Abdi, is the leader of the pirates. They come again next morning, but this only 5 pirates in 1 boat. Captain & its team perform various skills to make them go away but, finally they get into the vessel. Captain, orders all the crew to lock them up in the engine room & don't come out. Captain & his 2 crew member are captured in the bridge by pirates & order them to give money & search for all crew members. Other crew members, capture the leader of the pirates, when he goes alone for searching for them. But, when they are about to leave, they skilfully capture "Captain" in the life-boat in which they escape with the Captain. US Navy, gets to know about this & start an operation to rescue Captain, before they reach Somalia. Now, i'll go far from this as it would spoil all your fun.
The film occasionally seems like a battle between good vs evil. As it is a story of Phillip's ordeal, it is also battle between the fully equipped NAVY seals & four skinny Somali pirates with guns. The situation makes you feel bad for the Somali pirates. Director, Paul Greengrass has nailed it once again after making United 93 in air this time, he takes the route of Water. He has a habit of keeping the viewers on the edge of their seats with real drama captured in real time. With this one he has another winner up his sleeves. The movie is based on a true story when "Captain Phillips" was captured by Somali pirates in 2009. The emotion was needed to be there & it was all there.
"Tom Hanks", it's just so so difficult to say about a man like him, he has done it all, won Oscars, makes us smile everything. Tom Hanks & Captain Phillips is at its best in the first half, when they inter cut from one nail-biting situation to another. Hanks closing & nearly wordless scenes are the ones which you will see in the awards season. The last scene, where he is crying & shocked after the events that has happened to & around him, was a much needed one as it adds a human perspective to the events that has happened which has left him traumatized. With such a experienced actor, the newcomer Barkhad Abdi, makes himself heard in the movie with his big eyes & sunken cheeks, stained yellow teeth & a gun, he presents the Somali side of the story.
This One Is Not To Be Missded..!! For its story, emotions & TOM HANKS..!! & Oh yeah, in the last scene, please take some tissues with you, because you will cry for sure..!! I did..!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED..!!
Cast- Tom Hanks, Barkhad Abdi, Catherine Keener
Director - Paul Greengrass
